Default taming animals as a ranger

quickly after becoming a ranger i spoke to that tamer NPC and got a strider. I wasn't too happy that it started at level 1 but anyways I was disconnected and then went to wizards folley (this is in pre searing still) and I tried to tame a bear but every time i tried it would glitch and the bear would perform a spell called like 'untamable'. Well that wasnt it but that was the jist of it. Anyways I tamed a wolf soon after. So anyways getting to some kind of a point now. Why couldnt I tame the bear and are some pets better than other pets? Is the Wolf a bad choice? I know there are threads listing about the different tamable animals but not which ones are better.

Im kind of rambling so sorry if it is hard to follow but im getting tired now.

Well to get it started, where can you find some tamable animals in Old Ascalon?

some animals have a skill called "charm breaker", the bears in pre-searing. Its like an interupt. if you want a bear though. don't worry too much. they are available later in the game.

personally i wan't a warthog named prize-winning Hog... but thats just me
